NEW GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNITY YOUTH SUPPORT SCHEME (CYSS)

The Acting Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, The Hon. Wal. Fife, today released new guidelines for the operation of CYSS projects. CYSS, which commenced in October 1976 is an employment orientated programme designed to encourage community

support projects intended to help unemployed young people. .

"The new guidelines follow upon the Government's decision, announced by Mr Street in March of this year, that additional . funds would be made available for CYSS projects. Since October 1976, more than $6M. has been spent to assist an estimated 45,000 young people. The projects financed under CYSS have assisted young people to improve their prospects for employment

through self development and practical work experience."

Mr Fife said the new guidelines had been developed in the light of experiences of the scheme and in consultation with State CYSS Committees. Among other things, the new guidelines provide for:

. State CYSS Committees to have responsibility for decisions . regarding the funding of projects ; . ' .

. strengthening the employment orientation of CYSS projects to better assist unemployed young people find stable employment;

. increased responsibilities for Local Committees to oversight and monitor the effectiveness of projects and to ensure the . projects are meeting the needs of the local community;

. stress on the importance of Project Officers and their ability to assist unemployed young people toward employment.

Mr Fife said that the CYSS was a unique scheme which enabled the local community to assistthe young unemployed. "These new guidelines provide for increased community participation in developing CYSS projects." .
