NEWS RELEASE FROM THE MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS THE HON. TONY STREET, M.R

ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIONAL ABORIGINAL EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

The Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, the Hon

Tony Street, MP, today announced the establishment of the National

Aboriginal Employment Development Committee0 Mr Street said that

the Government introduced the National Employment Strategy for

Aboriginals last year with the essential aim of relieving the

extremely high levels of unemployment amongst Aboriginal people0

The Government decided that a major means of implementing the

Strategy should be through the development of .a National Campaign to stimulate the employment of Aboriginals throughout Australia

and that the campaign should be spearheaded by a National Committee.

Mr Street said the National Aboriginal Employment Development

Committee has now been formed and will have its first meeting on

June 16th in Melbournec The Committee * s major function, he said, will be to stimulate positive action by employers in providing

employment and training opportunities for Aboriginal people. This

is no easy task but there is much to be done to help equip Aboriginals compete on the open labour market. Mr Street said

he was sure that with commitment and co-operation from employers and the community generally, increased job opportunities could be

opened up for Aboriginal people.
