LIVE SHEEP EXPORT TRADE

The Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, The Hon Tony Street, today reported on progress with the Examination of the Employment Implications of the Live Sheep Export Trade. The examination is being conducted by Mr Geoff Miller, Director of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics (BAE).

Mr Street said that a large number of submissions have been received from many people and organisations interested in the trade. These submissions were being carefully studied by Mr Miller along with the results of research undertaken by BAE staff. The Minister indicated that he was very pleased with the response to the independent Examination.

The Minister also observed that Mr Miller is.currently consulting with interested union and farm organisations in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Perth.

Judging from progress to date, the Report from the Examination should provide a sound basis for further consultations between the interested parties. .

Mr Street indicated that Mr Miller would, however, require additional time to receive and consider further significant submissions.
