UNEMPLOYMENT IN AUSTRALIA - MARCH 1978 . . '

The r e s u lts o f the 2nd o f the monthly s e rie s o f Labour Force Surveys, ;

p re v io u s ly conducted q u a r t e r ly by the A u s tra lia n Bureau o f S t a t i s t i c s , are i

re le a s e d today. The monthly s e rie s w i l l continue to a s s is t in p ro vid in g ■

more acc u ra te in fo rm a tio n on the lab our m arket.

The A u s tr a lia n S t a t i s t i c i a n has reported t h a t · i n March 1978 an estim ated .:

345,3000 persons (2 0 3,1 00 males, 142,200 fem ales) were unemployed, looking

f o r f u l l - t i m e work - re p res e n tin g 6.3% o f the f u l l - t i m e labour fo rc e . A '

f u r t h e r 7 5 ,7 0 0 persons (1 8 ,3 0 0 males, 57,400 fem ales) were unemployed,

lo o k in g f o r p a r t - t im e work (7.9% o f the p a r t-tim e lab our f o r c e ) . This ‘

represents a f a l l o f 50,500 personslooking f o r f u l l - t i m e work and 5,600

persons lo o k in g f o r p a r t-tim e work from the previous survey.

During March 1978 the number of r e g is te re d unemployed seeking f u l l - t i m e

work f e l l by 21,262 or 4.9% compared w ith a f a l l o f 20,119 or 5.8% in March·

1977 and 25,729 or 8.5% in March 1976. School le a v ers decreased by 11,085

(18.2% ) compared w ith f a l l s o f 11,887 (24.1%) and 12,226 (28.8%) during the

same month o f the 2 preceding y e a rs .

At end-March, th e re were 409,994 unemployed persons re g is te re d w ith the CES

o r 6.4% o f the t o t a l , ie f u l l - t i m e plus p a r t - t im e , lab o u r fo r c e . This

compares w ith 326,549 or 5.3% o f the estim ated t o t a l labour fo rc e as a t

end-March 1977 and 278,010 or 4.5% o f the estim ated t o t a l lab o u r force as

a t the end o f March 1 9 7 6 ^

U n f il l e d vacancies f e l l during the month by 2,734 o r 12.3% to a le v e l o f

1 9 ,5 23 . L ast March vacancies f e l l by 5,402 (18.7% ) to 23,468 w h ile in March

1976 they decreased by 8,036 to 22,976.

During March 1978 (a 3 .6 week month allo w in g f o r the e ffe c ts o f the Easter

v a c a t io n ) , a t o t a l o f 152,783 persons re g is te re d f o r employment w ith the .

CES were e it h e r placed or lapsed and th e re fo re no lo n g e r re q u ire d the

a s s istan c e o f the CES. In a d d it io n , r e f e r r a l s to employers t o t a l l e d

1 05 ,57 4 . These fig u re s compare w ith t o t a l placements and lapsings o f

201,119 and r e f e r r a l s o f 129,808 in March 1977 (a 5 week month).

The s e a s o n a lly a d ju s te d f i g u r e f o r o v ertim e decreased from 2 .6 hours per

employee in January to 2 .3 hours in February.

The M i n i s t e r f o r S o cia l S e c u r i t y , Senator the Hon M argaret G u i l f o y l e , .

has advised t h a t as a t 2 4 /3 /7 8 th e number o f persons r e c e iv in g unemployment

b e n e f i t s was 2 90 ,3 5 6 - a f a l l o f 8 ,0 9 9 from a month ago.

in th e a tta c h e d t a b l e s . They in c lu d e d e t a il e d in fo rm a tio n by geo g rap h ical

a r e a s w i t h i n n o n -m e tro p o lita n areas and f o r th e m e tr o p o lita n areas in

S t a t e as a w hole.
