TONY STREET, M.R1/78PROVISIONAL COMMONWEALTH EMPLOYMENT SERVICE STATISTICS END-DECEMBER 1977Movements in CES statistics during December 1977 were dominated by normal seasonal influences.During the month the number of registered unemployed increased by 47,128 or 13.2% compared with an increase of 55,016 or 20.2% in December 1976 and 63,138 or 23.8% in December 1975. School-leavers rose by 30,823 (106.3%) compared with rises of 31,386 (187.1%) and 41,294 (217.9%) during the same month of the 2 preceding years. .At end-December there were 404,085 unemployed persons registered with the CES or 6.5% of the estimated labour force of 6.2m. This compares with 327,534 or 5.4% of the labour force as at end-December 1976 and 328,705 or 5.4% of the labour force at the end of December 1975. ■Unfilled vacancies fell during the month by 293 or 1.4% to a level of 19,963. Last December vacancies increased by 1,045 (4.1%) to 26,544 while in December 1975 they increased by 876 (3.1%) to 29,254.During December 1977 (a month of 3 working weeks) a total of 101,496 persons registered for employment with the CES were either placed or lapsed and therefore no longer required the assistance of the CES. In addition, referrals to employers totalled 77,218. These figures compared with total placements and lapsings of 123,547 and referrals of 92,811 in December 1976 (a month of 4 working weeks).The seasonally adjusted figure for overtime increased from 2.2 hours per employee in October to 2.5 hours in November. .The provisional statistics for each of the 6 States, the Northern Territory and for Australia as a whole are set out in the attached tables.
