NFWR RELEASE FROM THE MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS THE HON. TONY STREET, M.P.

Mr Street said today that Mr Justice Moore's statement announcing

the earlier hearing for the National Wage Case, should be

considered carefully by all thinking people in the community.

There is no prospect of bringing inflation under control unless

costs are restrained. Wages are a major item of costs.

Inflation will not be reined in while individual groups of workers M ■ ; · ·

continue to pursue' their ;Ow.n ahlfish '.interests; and seek wage

increases beyond the' level of industry's capacity to pay the

workers, generally.

Any benefit that they secure is at the expense of the majority

of their fellow workers. .

Equally, employers need to recognise their responsibility for .

ensuring wage stability and not create situations seeking to buy

industrial peace at any price, and which can be exploited by others

in "the community.
