FROM THE MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS THE HON. TONY STREET, M.R ' f,

Embargo: 5pm Friday 9 January 1976

PROVISIONAL COMMONW EALTH EMPLOYMENT SERVICE STATISTICS DECEMBER 1975

The labor market during December remained depressed. ■ .

By the end of December the number of registered unemployed had increased by 63,138 to 328,705 or 5.6 per cent of the labor force. The number of unemployed school-leavers had ■ increased by 41,294 to 60,249.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment fell by 1,256 to 286,923 or 4.8 per cent of the labor force. Unemployed excluding school-leavers declined by 4,194 to 267,768. School-leaver unemployed- increased by 2,938 to 19,155. . . . .

In respect of seasonally adjusted figures, the Acting Commonwealth Statistician has advised that:

"The problem with the seasonal adjustment of the school-leaver registrant statistics, reported with the release of the November figures, continues and figures for December are also understated. As a result the seasonally adjusted statistics of school-leaver registrants cannot be taken as a reliable indicator of trend. To this extent seasonally adjusted statistics of all registrants (of which school-leavers are a component) are·also understated. . '

Further information on this matter is available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics on request". .

Unfilled vacancies registered with the CES rose, in original terms, by 876 to 29,254. After seasonal adjustment, unfilled vacancies declined slightly by 165 to 26,368.

The Minister for Social Security, Senator Margaret Guilfoyle, has advised that at the end of December the number of persons receiving Unemployment Benefit increased by 46,783 to 231,311. In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of Unemployment Benefit recipients declined by 28,022 to187,876. - .

The seasonally adjusted level of overtime worked by firms in my Department's monthly survey rose from 1.9 hoprs in October to 2.0 hours in November.

A t the end of December there were some 8,400 persons registered with the GES who had been employed previously under REDS, a rise of less than 200 since end-November. In total around 5,500 persons were employed under REDS, a fall of about 3,500 since November. .

The provisional statistics for each of the 6 States and for Australia as a whole are set out in the tables which follow. More detailed tables will be included in the Department's Monthly Review of the Employment Situation to be released on 19 January 1976. . /
