FURTHER EDUCATION COUNCIL FOR NT ' '

The Minister for Education, Senator Garrick, announced today the establishment of a three-member Further

Education Council for the Northern Territory.

The Council will be convened as soon as possible by its

Chairman, the Director of the Northern Territory Division' of the Department of Education, Dr James Eedle.

Its other members will be nominated by the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and the Council of Darwin Community College.

Senator Ca.rrick said the Council's immediate task would be to advise him as soon as possible on what its long-term responsibilities should be. ■ . · '

It would also be asked to·advise on its needs for ; consultative support, where responsibility for operating the vocational training centre at Batchelor should rest,

the relationship between the Council, the Darwin Community College and the Department of Employment and Industrial

Relations and the future of the Alice Springs College.

He said the Council would be asked to consider in

particular its own role in co-ordinating resource allocation and development plans for technical and further education in the Northern Territory.

Senator Garrick said he would refer the Council's

conclusions to other relevant Ministers for their '

consideration, '

The Council's long-term functions might include

responsibility ' ;

. to encourage, develop, maintain and improve technical

■ and further education

. to recommend to the Minister and Legislative Assembly on matters related to co-ordination of technical and - . further education '

. .to ensure a rational distribution of resources for TAPE

· . promote TAPE courses and recommend on the distribution • of financial'allocations for TAPE '

Senator Garrick said he saw the Council as both an .

advisory and policy-formulating body with responsibility

for the whole TAPE area. . '

Pie said the establishment of the Council would provide for decision-making at the local level and was in accord with proposals for the development of self-government for the Northern Territory. ' ·
