EXTENSIONS TO KOOMARRI SCHOOL

The Minister for Education, Senator Garrick, said today extensions to

Koomarri School would be built during·1976/77.

"The project has been included in the Department of Education’s proposals

to the National Capital Development Commission for education capital works

for 1976-77» Senator Garrick said»

"We expect the extensions will cost about $1 million»

"The work is being given a high priority in relation to other projects and

the design process is well under way»

"I hope that construction will begin early in 1977".

The proposed extension is designed to provide additional facilities required

to teach older children basic home skills and to encourage them in self—

reliance.

The extension will include:

. an educational "home" area comprising a laundry, kitchen, living area,

shower and bedroom;

. a general purpose hall to be used as a physical development area and to

include various items of equipment such as a trampoline and wall bars.

In addition a stage will be provided together with seating for about 80

people;

« · general teaching areas consisting of two small and three large areas

with observation rooms, three store rooms, a teachers’ room, toilets,

equipment store, sick room, first-aid room and library;

o specialist areas consisting of a physiotherapy room with office and

store., a medical room, a sisters' room and a room for a psychologist

and speech therapists with special store. .

In addition, there will be a kitchen with dining facilities, a staff

common room and a general store for" outdoor play items. ■
