Australians may spend up to five years in Japan from next

year under scholarships offered by the Japanese Ministry of Education

(Mombusho). ,

The undergraduate scholarships are for specialised study in

Japanese leading to a bachelor's degree.

They are tenable from April next year and benefits include

tourist class air fare to and from Japan, a monthly allowance of

60,000 yen (about $134) and an arrival allowance of 25*000 yen

(about $55).

Applicants should be at least of matriculation standard and

between the ages of 18 and 22 years on 1 April 1975<

Postgraduate research scholarships for study in the humanities,

social sciences and natural sciences in Japan are available also from

the ministry. ·

They may be taken up from April next year for two years or

from October next year for 18· months.

Tourist class aii fare to and from Japan, a monthly allowance

of 89,000 yen (about $199) and an arrival allowance of 25,000 yen

(about $55) are the benefits of these awards.

The closing date for applications is 11 October.
