FUNDS FOR CHILD AND ADULT MIGRANT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

The Australian Minister for Education, Mr. Kim Beazley, today announced that a total of $15.3 m . had been appropriated for expenditure by State Education Departments and non-government school authorities for child and adult migrant education in 1974/75.

Funds are provided by the Australian Government under the child migrant education program for the payment of salaries of special teachers employed to teach English to non-English- speaking migrant children, for the purchase of appropriate equipment for this work and in certain instances for the conveyance of children.

A total of $12.4 million has been allocated for these three purposes in 1974/75, and $2.9 million has been allocated for the adult migrant education program.

The child migrant education program also provides teaching and learning materials for use in the teaching of English to migrant children and assists in the training of' special teachers.

Funds are made available also for the provision, under an emergency program, of classrooms for State and independent schools and for research projects being undertaken under the aegis of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and the Australian Council for Educational Research.

Funds are provided by the Australian Government under the adult migrant education program for the payment of salaries of special teachers and administrative costs associated with contin­ uation classes, full-time and part-time accelerated courses,

correspondence courses, courses in industry and the home tutor scheme. ·

The adult migrant education program also provides for· intensive English language courses, the payment.of allowances · for full-time courses, and finances the production of migrant education television programs.

Mr. Beazley said these funds were part of the Australian Government's expenditure on migrant education services which is . expected to be $20.4 million in 1974/75, an increase of 42% on. expenditure in 1973/74.
