A new residential rural college will be built at Katherine in the Northern Territory. .

The Australian Minister for Education, Mr Kim Beazley, announced today Cabinet approval for the project. .

' Mr Beazley said a planning committee, including representatives of his department, the Departments of Housing and Construction, Northern Territory, Aboriginal Affairs, Agriculture and Northern Development and the CSIRO, would be set up.

Educationists from the States and representatives of trade . unions and employer organisations concerned with^ricultural and pastoral industries in the Northern Territory would be on the committee also.

Mr Beazley said firm planning proposals for the development of the college, including cost estimates, would be put to Cabinet after the committee had reported.

The committee would report on the form and organisational structure of the college, the educational services it should provide, the general lines of its educational development and the siting, initial building and associated requirements of the college.

Mr Beazley said the committee would take into account that the college should provide training in the broad principles of farm management.

It should provide training which would involve direct participation in primary production. ยท

' The college should cater also for people currently engaged in agricultural and pastoral industries.

Mr Beazley said he favoured a college which placed the emphasis on training for the agricultural and pastoral industries but included studies in related technical areas.
