National seminar will examine teaching of school librarians

The rapid increase in both the number of quality of

school libraries under the Commonwealth program, which is

now in its fourth year, has emphasised the need for more

trained librarians» · '

How to meet this demand will be examined at a five-day

seminar "Education for School Librarianship" to be held

at Brassey House from July 31 to August 4= .

. Organised by the Department of Education and Sciencey

it will be attended by 35 specialists in school library

administration from State education departments and

tertiary institutions, and will include practising school


Three guest speakers will address the seminar :

. Dr M 0 Balson, Senior Lecturer. Faculty

of Education at Monash University.

. Mr Roy Lundin, Research Officer for

the Commonwealth Secondary Schools Libraries

Project at the University of Queensland.

. Mr P. Hughes, Head of the School of ,

. Teacher Education at the Canberra College

' of Advanced Education. '

It is intended that the seminar with workshop

sessions will prepare guidelines on the training of school

librarians which will assist tertiary institutions in

structuring school library courses < ,

In preparing these guidelines the seminar will consider

the functions of the school library, the roles of the .

school library staff and methods of school library use.

The seminar will be opened by the Secretary of the .

Department of Education and Science., Sir Hugh Ennor, on
