MARITIME EXERCISE NEARS END

The operational phase of the international *

exercise for maritime squadrons, the Finca.st.le award

competition, ends at RAAF Edinburgh, South5 Australia·, tonight«

Umpires for each aircraft during the

; competition have been assessing efficiency of the crews

and the results and the winner will be announced at a

farewell social gathering on Sunday night at the air base.

The top maritime aircraft of Britain, New

Zealand, Canada and Australia have been competing against

each other all this week flying day and night missions

to find and "destroy" the RAN submarine Oxley cruising ®

in water somewhere off the NSW coast. .

- The RAF is flying a Nimrod aircraft in the

competition, the RNZAF an Orion, the Canadian Forces an .

Argus, while the RAAF if being represented by a Neptune

- aircraft from 10 Squadron, Townsville.

The Fincastle award is the Olympic games

of maritime flying throughout the British Commonwealth. h

Air Commodore L.H. Williamson, senior air .

staff officer, HQ Operational Command, RAAF, will present

the Fincastle Trophy on Sunday night. It is currently

held by No 11 Squadron, RAAF, at Edinburgh.
