WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 10. 1973 No. 162/73


(Statement by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon. L.H. Barnard, MP)

Captain M.P. Reed will become Chief of Naval

Technical Services on January 22, 1974, on the retirement

of Rear-Admiral B.W. Mussared. Captain Reed will be

promoted Rear-Admiral on taking up the appointment ·

The Minister for Defence announced the

appointment today.


Captain Reed entered the Royal Australian Navy

in 1936 as a cadet. On graduating in 1939 he served in

HMAS Australia. He entered the Royal Naval Engineering

College in 1940 and after graduating in 1943 had further

service as an Engineer Officer in HMAS Australia. Captain

Reed has held a number of senior engineering appointments

including Chief Staff Officer (Technical) to the H a g

Officer Commanding the Fleet and General Manager of the

Williamstown Dockyard. He is currently Director General,

Dockyards and Maintenance at Navy Headquarters·
