UNITS LEAVE FOR MARITIME N3TRRCT5E

(Statement by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon. L.H. Barnard, MP)

The Minister for Defence, Mr. Lance Barnard

announced today that three Royal Australian Navy ships

will leave Sydney on Friday, August 24 to visit Hawaii.

They will later join ships of allied navies

for annual exercises.

They will visit Suva en route to Hawaii,

and are expected to be away approximately eight weeks.

The ships are the aircraft carrier HMAS

MELBOURNE, the destroyer HMAS BRISBANE, and the

destroyer escort HMAS STUART. They will be under the

command of Rear Admiral A.M. Synnot, CBS, Flag Officer

Commanding the Australian Fleet.

Orion maritime patrol aircraft from the

RAAF Base at Edinburgh, SA, will leave on September 6

to join the exercise.
