RAAF OFFICER PROMOTED TO AIR COMMODORE

• (Statement "by the Hon. l.H." Barnard, M.P., Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence)

Group Captain S.D. Evans, of the Department of Air

in Canberra, has been promoted to the rank of Air Commodore.

His promotion and appointment to the post of Director-

General Plans and Policy at Department of Air in Canberra was

announced today by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for

Defence, Mr. L.H. Barnard.

A former Commanding Officer of the RAAF1s No. 2

(Canberra) Squadron in South Vietnam, Air Commodore Evans has

recently returned from the United Kingdom where he attended the

Royal College of Defence Studies.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES "

Air Commodore Selwyn David EVANS. DSC, AFC, joined

the RAAF in 1943, and saw service as a transport pi]ot during

V/ or Id War II and during the Berlin airlift. In the early post­

war years he was employed on flying instructional duties,

including two years exchange duty with Central Flying School,

New Zealand. Later as a VIP captain with No. 34 Squadron, based

at Fairbairn ACT, he was awarded the Air Force Cross. In 1967

he was posted to Vietnam to command No. 2 (Bomber) Squadron,

flying Canberra aircraft. He was subsequently awarded a

Distinguished Service Order for his outstanding leadership of

that squadron on operations in Vietnam. On his return to Australia

in 1968 he was appointed Director of Air Force Plans at Department

of Air, Canberra, and last year successfully completed the Royal

College of Defence Studies course in the United Kingdom.
