LABOR AND RURAL AFFAIRS.

Notes from an address by the Member for Farrer and Minister for Defence, M r D a v i d Fairbairn DFC. M P . , to a Public Meeting in the Farrer Electorate at Albury at 8.00pm on Friday November 17, 1972.

The Labor Party's ignorance of rural affairs and cynical

use of Primary Industry issues for short "term and blatant

political advantage are being exposed increasingly to people in.

country areas.

Minister for Defence, Mr. David Fairbairn said that as a

Cabinet Minister who represented an important rural electorate,

and as a former primary producer, he was very concerned about

Labor's rural policies. ■ ' .

Speaking at Albury, Mr. Fairbairn said the Deputy Leader of

the Labor Party, Mr. Barnard had claimed that Mr. McMahon's

policy speech lacked content on rural issues.

This was not correct as any objective perusal would disclose. g

However, rural producers should not forget that they figure _

also in the Labor policies, though perhaps they may wish they did

not.

A Labor Government would inevitably do all it could to

facilitate the introduction of the 35 hour week.

Labor's 35 hour working policy would increase not only the

cost of labor on the farm but must put up the cost of any materials

used by· the farmer. These ma.terials include dips, drenches ,

machinery, fertilisers, fencing wire, and many other articles which

have a high labour content in their manufacture.

Mr. Vhitlam had also said., that he believed the Australian

dollar was undervalued. He has created the impression that if

elected he would immediately appreciate the Australian dollar.

Such a move would mean that the farmer and exporter would
