NEW DIRECTOR FOR JOINT INTELLIGENCE ORGANISATION

The Department of Defence announced today that Mr.

G-.A. Jockel, who recently terminated an assignment in Indonesia

as Ambassador, has been appointed by the Department of Defence

to succeed Mr. R.W. Furlonger as Director of the Joint

Intelligence Organisation in Canberra,

In this capacity Mr. Jockel will be Chairman of the

National Intelligence Committee which is responsible to the ,

Defence Committee for the production of national intelligence to

support Australia’s national security policy.

The JIO is responsible for the preparation of

intelligence analyses and assessments on military, economic

and technical matters affecting Australia’s defence.

Mr. Jockel has been Ambassador to Indonesia since

1 969. He was a First Assistant Secretary in the Department of

Foreign Affairs from 1964 to 1969, following a number of overseas

postings with that Department. He received a CBE in 1971 .

As announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs

recently, Mr. Furlonger is to succeed Mr. Jockel as Ambassador first

to Indonesia. Mr. Furlonger, the / Director of the Joint

Intelligence Organisation,took up·his present post in.1969.
