The State and Territory Directors of Emergency

Services would meet in conference with the Director-General

of the Natural Disasters Organisation (Major-General A.B. Stretton)

in Canberra tomorrow and Wednesday (Nov 30 - Dec 1), the

Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen, announced today.

Items to be considered included the Commonwealth

equipment and financial support programs for State and

Territory Emergency Service organisations, the NDO's public

information program, and a review of doctrines and procedures

relating to emergency service units. The formation of an

Emergency Services Institute and the program of training at

the National Emergency Services College at Mount Macedon,

Victoria, were also on the agenda.

The meeting will be chaired by Maj-Gen Stretton,

and State delegations will be headed by:

Mr K.D. Whiting, Director, Queensland State

Emergency Service; Air Vice Marshal W.E. Townsend (Retd),

Director, NSW State Emergency Services; Lt-Col F.B. Wood

(Retd), Co-ordinator, Victoria State Emergency Service;

Mr G.F. Paltridge, Director, Tasmanian State Emergency Service;

Superintendent E. Aston, Director, South Australian State

Emergency Service; Mr M.R. Bromell, Officer-in-Charge, WA

State Emergency Service; Mr R.J. Aitken, Director, ACT

Emergency Service; Hr R. Phillips, Executive Officer, Northern

Territory Emergency Service.

Mr Killen said the meetings played a valuable part

in strengthening the co-operative arrangements between the

Commonwealth and the States in the provision of Commonwealth

physical assistance during disaster situations.
