The Royal Australian Navy Trials and Assessing Unit -

RANTAU - celebrates its 10th birthday tomorrow, November 16,


RANTAU, based in North Sydney, was established in

1966 to combine existing Navy trials authorities and the

trials and assessment requirements arising from the

introduction of sophisticated weapons systems such as Ikara,

Tartar and other missiles.

On its introduction RANTAU had no counterpart in

Western defence. Similar units have since been established by

the Royal Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy.

RANTAU was transferred to the Service Laboratories

and.Trials Division of Defence Science and Technology in the

Defence reorganisation of 1975, and works in close collaboration

with other Defence Science Establishments and the Services.

The present Officer-in-Charge of RANTAU is Captain

H.H.G. Dalrymple.
