Australian soldiers marched proudly onto a parade

ground in Texas recently to join 4,000 American troops celebrating

their unit's 130th birthday.

The 165 Australians are spending five weeks at Fort

Bliss, El Paso, as part of the US Army's 3rd Armored Cavalry

Regiment, while a similar number of American troops are training

in Queensland.

It is the first exchange between .Australian soldiers

and US Army men based on the US mainland.

The Australians are drawn from 4th Cavalry Regiment,

and 8/9th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, from Enoggera,

Brisbane, and the 1st Armoured Regiment from Puckapunyal,


The visiting soldiers were invited to take part in

the US unit's anniversary parade and were also welcome guests

at dances and parties held to mark the regiment's history,

which spans 36 campaigns over seven wars,since it was formed'

as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen in 1846.

The exchange ends this week as the contingents

return to their respective units.
