The first exchange exercise involving Australian soldiers

and American troops based on continental U.S.A. would take place

between October 9 and November 8, the Minister for Defence,

Mr D.J. Killen, announced today.

The training is an expansion of the existing programme

which involved Australian and Hawaii-based U.S. troops for the

past four years.

Mr Killen said the new exchange would involve 165 men •'>Vv ‘

of each country.

Australian armoured and infantry elements from

Puckapunyal, Victoria, and Enoggera, Queensland, would go to the

U.S^ 3rd Armoured Cavalry Regiment, at Fort Bliss, Texas, while

the Americans from the Regiment would train with 6th Task Force,

stationed at Enoggera, Brisbane.

Reciprocal training of this nature was designed to

increase expertise and develop understanding of tactics and

techniques employed by allied nations, Mr Killen said. f
