Combined exercises with five power units in Australia

Since late 1974 troops of both South East

Asian members of the Five Power Arrangements, Malaysia

and Singapore, have taken part with Australian forces

in combined exercises here. Further such exercises

are in the planning stage.

Arrangements are being developed for a brigade

headquarters of the Singapore Armed Forces to take part

in a command post exercise with Australian headquarters

in Queensland probably in March or April 1978. This

will be an Australian exercise in an Australian setting,

exercising Australian and SAF staffs in their procedures

and staff-work in battle.

Headquarters 1 Division, which will conduct

the exercise, has not yet decided where it should take

place. Preferred possibilities are the Shoalwater Bay

training area, near Rockhampton, or in southern

Queensland. ■ . ,

The exercise is still in the initial planning

stage. No decisions have been taken about such details

as the extent of the notional "battlefield".

The exercise is entirely unrelated to

Australian contingency planning.1 Its purpose is to

exercise Australian and Singapore Armed Forces staff in a

Malaysian Armed Forces to contribute personnel to

participate in a combined exercise in Australia also

in 1978.
