F111 crash - urgent telex releases

THURSDAY. APRIL 28, 1977. NO. 94/77


An F111C aircraft from RAAF Base, Amberley, Qld,

crashed at 12.27 p.m. today about eight kilometers from

Armidale, NSW.

The two-man crew of pilot and navigator ejected

■ ' after an explosion in the rear of the aircraft. The pair,

.whose names have not yet been released, parachuted safely to

the ground in the aircraft1s escape capsule.

They have been taken to Armidale Hospital for medical

examination. It is believed they are not injured.

Armidale police have set up a guard on the wreckage.

A team of RAAF guards is being flown from Richmond,

NSW, in a C130 Hercules transport to take over the guard on

the wreckage.

A -Chinook helicopter from Amberley is flying a team

of Fill specialists to Armidale to investigate the crash. • . ft

The Air Officer Commanding Operational Command,

Air Vice Marshal F.S. Robey, has convened a Court of Inquiry.


The cost of the FlllC aircraft which crashed near

Armidale today was $A6.8 million-The total cost of the Fill project to the RAAF has

been $A270 million. The total project cost includes the cost

of ground support equipment, flight simulator, spare parts

etc., as well as the twenty four aircraft themselves.

The first Fill's arrived at Amberley in June, 1973.

This is the first one to crash.


The names of the crew of the crashed Fill are:

Pilot - Captain Bill Baker, a United States Air Force

officer on exchange duty with No. 6 Squadron, RAAF Base,

Amberley. He is aged 32, and is a very-experienced Fill pilot.

Navigator - Flight Lieutenant David Allan Clarkson,

aged 29, of No. 6 Squadron, RAAF Base,Amberley.
