Two senior Navy promotions

The Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen, today

announced two senior promotions in the Royal Australian Navy.

They are:-Commodore John Davidson, of Narrabundah, A.C.T., who

will be promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral with effect from

April 5, 1977; and

COptain Kaye Vonthethoff, of Pearce, A.C.T., who will

be granted the acting rank of Commodore with effect from March

26, 1977.

Mr Killen said that following the promotions there

would be several changes in senipr naval appointments.

He said it was plannedj that Rear Admiral G.V. Gladstone

would relinquish his appointment; as Flag Officer Commanding Her

Majesty's Australian Fleet (FOCAF) on April 15, 1977, and would

then be employed as the Commander of the combined Australian-New

Zealand task group deployed to the Spithead Naval Review.

Rear Admiral N.E. McDonald, who is currently Flag

Officer Commanding East Australia Area (FOCEA), will become FOCAF

from April 16, 1977.

Commodore Davidson, on promotion, will take up the

appointment of FOCEA on April 6, 1977. Commodore Davidson's

present appointment as Director General of Navy Logistics will

be taken over by Captain Vonthethoff.

Brief Biographical Details;

Commodore John Davidson, aged 52, entered the RAN as

a Lieutenant Commander from the RN in April, 1956. Major

appointments he has held include Secretary to the First Naval

Member, 1965-1967; Director of Administrative Planning, · 1967­

1969: Imperial Defence College, London, 1970-1971; special

duties'assisting the Kerr Committee, 1971-1973; Chief of Naval

Supply and Works, 1975-1976; and Director-General of Logistics

Navy, 1976 until the present.

; Captain Kave Vonthethoff, aged 46, joined the RAN as a

Cadet Midshipman in January, 1948. Major postings he has had

include Supply Officer tiMAS Vampire, 1965-1967; Supply Officer

HMAS Melbourne, 1969-1970; Secretary to the Chief of Naval

Staff, 1971-1973; Chief Staff Officer (Admin) to FOCAF, 1975­

1976; and Director of Naval Logistic Planning, 1976 until the

present. .
