TAIWANESE FISHING BOAT APPREHENDED

The fourth Taiwanese fishing vessel,suspected of

encroaching on fishing grounds inside Australia's 12-mile

declared fishing zone this year, has been apprehended by the

Royal Australian Navy.

At approximately 3 a.m. today the fast patrol boat

HMAS Advance (Lieutenant B.D. Robertson) intercepted the 30-

metre steel-hull drift netter Fong Kuo No 82, about 100

nautical miles south of Weipa and just north of Cape Keer-Weer

in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

A naval boarding party was placed aboard the Taiwanese

vessel, which is now being escorted to Weipa. It is ejected that

the two vessels will reach port about 6 p.m. today.

The Fong Kuo No 82 will then be handed over to the

northern fisheries unit of the Department of Primary Industry

for further investigation.

A sister ship, the Fong Kuo No 81, was apprehended

in the Gulf of Carpentaria on January 30, 1977 and is now

at Weipa awaiting disposal after having been ordered forfeit to

the Commonwealth on February 3, 1977.
