Rocket campaign at Woomera

NO. 24/77 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1977.


Six American Aerobee research rockets will be

launched during a campaign at Woomera this month.

The Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen, said

today that· the firings had been agreed to in an Exchange of

Notes between the Australian Government and the Government

of the United States.

As with similar successful campaigns at Woomera

in 1970 and 1973, this program is sponsored and organised by

the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration


The sounding rockets are provided and launched by

NASA and accomplish a variety of experiments designed by

scientists at American Universities.

Each rocket will carry instruments above the earth's

atmosphere to detect and measure ultra-violet light and

x-rays from stars which cannot be observed from the northern


Mr Killen said that all the data from these

experiments would be made available to the Australian

scientific community in due course.

Also, an additional Aerobee rocket will be launched

during the campaign on behalf of the upper atmosphere research

program being undertaken by Professor Carver at the

University of Adelaide.
