Rear Admiral A.K. Synnot is to become the next

Chief of Naval Staff.

The appointment is one of three senior appointments

announced today by the Minister for Defence, nr n.J. Aillen. ·

Admiral·Synnot is to be promoted Vice-Admiral and

take up the appointment on November 23, 1976, when the present

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral H.D. Stevenson retires.

Mr Killen said that Rear Admiral Synnot had had a

distinguished naval career, including service on RAN and EN

ships during World War II. He was loaned to the Royal Malaysian

Navy to be Chief of Naval Staff from 1962 to 1965.

In 1970 he was Promoted to Rear-Admiral and appointed

as -Chief of Naval I'ersoimel. He became Deputy Cnief of Naval

Staff in 1971- and Flag Officer Commanding Her Majesty’s Australian

Fleet in January 1973.

Ho is presently serving in the Department of Defence

as the Assistant Chief of Defence Force Staff, having joined the

Department in February 1974 as Director of Joint Staff. .

Mr Xillen also announced that Rear Admiral

G.J. Willis who is now Chief of Navy Materiel would succeed

Admiral Synnot as Assistant Chief of Defence Force Staff.

Mr Xillen further announced the creation of a new

position at two star (Major General equivalent) level in the

Department of Defence under the authority of the Chief of

Defence Force Staff (Lieutenant General Hassett). The new post

is designated Chief of Joint Operations and Flans.

Mr Xillen said the new post was required because of

the new command and administrative responsibilities that had

devolved on the office of the Chief of Defence Force Staff

following the coming into force of the recent amendments, to

the Defence Act. .

Air Vice Marshal J.C. Jordan (now Chief of Air Force

Personnel) had been selected to fill the new post and would take

up duty early in July. . .
