RAAF Mirage crashes

TUESDAY. MARCH 16, 1976 NO. 62/76


A RAAF Mirage fighter aircraft crashed three kilometres south-west of its base at RAAF Williamtown, NSW, this afternoon following a probable engine malfunction. The aircraft was destroyed.

The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Geoffrey Alan Kubank, 28, married, of Williamtown, ejected safely and was taken by Iroquois helicopter to the sick quarters at RAAF Williamtown for observation.

The accident occurred at 1.07 pm while Fit Lt Kubank was carrying out formation flying practice in the Williamtown airfisld circuit area, at 500 ft. There were·four Mirages in the formation.

■ The aircraft crashed on NSW Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board property.

The Air Officer Commanding Operational Command, Air Vice Marshal F.S. Robey, has convened a court of inquiry into the accident, and the Directorate of Air Force Safety, Air

Offi.ce, Canberra, has sent a team of investigators to the crash scene.
