AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE EMPLOYMENT STATISTICS

The Minister for Defence, Mr D.J. Killen, said

today that the strength of the Permanent Defence Force was

69,151. The strengths of each Service were - Navy 16,184;

921, in January. Navy strength increased by 275, Army by

482 and Air Force by 164.

Total enlistments in January for the three Services

numbered 1,737 of which 552 were male general enlistments.

Mr Killen said the response to the College/Academy recruiting

campaigns was satisfactory and achieved the planned entries

for these e s t ablishments. During January there were 837

Apprentice and Junior Recruit e n t r a n t s , who have taken advantage

of the wide range of training opportunities available in the

Services. . t ,

Mr Killeri went on to point out that each of the

Services was still very interested in receiving applications

from suitable young men and w o m e n .

The number of officers who resigned and left their

Service in January totalled 55, compared with 45 in January

1975. Of these, 34 were eligible for a pension and have in

effect retired early.
