MONDAY. NOVEMBER 15, 1982 NO. 182/82


A combined joint maritime exercise involving

ships and aircraft of Australia, the United States and

New Zealand began off the Western Australian coast

south west of Fremantle today (November 15).

The Minister for Defence, Mr Ian Sinclair, said

today that more than 4,000 Servicemen would take part in . . .

the exercise, named Sandgroper 82.

Participating forces include the Australian

warships HMAS Stalwart, HMAS Supply, HMAS Yarra, HMAS Perth,

HMAS Swan, the Attack class patrol boats HMAS Acute, and

HMAS Buccaneer and the Oberon class submarine HMAS Otway..

The United States Navy is represented by USS Francis Hammond

and USS Knox, while New Zealand's contribution is HMNZS-Otago.

Aircraft from the three participating countries

include P3C Orion maritime aircraft, Skyhawks and F-16 fighters.

Troopers of the Special Air Service Regiment will also take

part in the exercise.

The main surface force is under the command of

the Flag Officer Commanding the Australian Fleet, Rear

Admiral M.W. Hudson, while the aircraft are under the

command of Air Commodore N.F. Ashworth, Officer Commanding

RAAF Base, Pearce. .

The exercise will end on November 25.
