The last serving RAAF member of the famous wartime

British Bomber Command has retired. '

He is Air Commodore Langton James ('Blue') Connelly,

57, of Lyons, Canberra, who served as a wireless-airgunner in ·

Lancaster bombers of No. 57 Squadron, RAF, based at East Kirkby,

Lincolnshire. -

' Air Commodore Connell^ had 39.years of unbroken

RAAF service and was Director-General of Manpower in Air Force

Office when he retired on July 22.

He was born in Bangalow, New South Wales, and

joined the RAAF in 1943 a few days after his eighteenth ,

birthday. He trained in Australia and on graduation as a

sergeant was posted to England in January 1944.

After the war he Continued to fly with various

RAAF squadrons■for several years. He also spent 12 months back

in England in 1950 flying in Lincoln bombers on exchange duty

with Bomber Command. .

For the last 10 years he held senior administrative

appointments. -
