CHANGES AT PINE GAP JOINT FACILITY

New computers and research equipment are to be

installed at the Joint Defence Space Research Facility

at Pine Gap, near Alice Springs. This was announced today

by the Minister for Defence, Mr Ian Sinclair.

Mr Sinclair said the installation of the new

equipment follows the recent completion of a building extension

at the facility by Jennings Industries of Adelaide at a cost

of just over $lm. The intention to carry out this building

work had been announced by the Government last year. The

installation of the new equipment could require the construction

of an additional antenna at the facility. ·.

' Much of the new equipment would be supplied by

specialised contractors in the United States, but a large

computer maintenance contract has been awarded to Digital

Equipment Australia Pty. Ltd. for support.of computers at

the facility.

Twenty new houses would be built in Alice Springs

by a local contractor to help alleviate the accommodation

pressures caused by the additional staff required to install,

commission and utilise the equipment.

Mr Sinclair said he had visited both Pine Gap,

and the Joint Defence Space Communications Station at

Nurrungar in South Australia on June 14.

He had been briefed by both Australian and US

personnel at the two facilities, and was satisfied that

Australia was fully informed about the facilities, and that ? ■

their operations supported Australia’s national interests.
