th e D efence D epartm ent as D efence R e p re s e n ta tiv e in S ingapore and M alaya. He l a t e r a tte n d e d th e 1965 c o u rse a t th e Im p e ria l Defence

C o lle g e , U.K. On h i s r e t u r n , he became D ir e c to r o f M il ita r y

O p e ra tio n s and P la n s . M ajor G eneral Hay was aw arded th e MBE in

1947. He was a p p o in te d Deputy C h ie f o f th e G eneral S t a f f and

prom oted to Temporary M ajor G eneral in A ugust 1967.

l a t e r he became D ir e c to r o f M il i t a r y O p e ra tio n s a t Army H e a d q u a rte rs

an appointm ent fo llo w e d by secondment to th e D epartm ent o f D efence f o r d u ty w ith th e SEATO M il ita r y P la n n in g O ffic e i n Bangkok. He

was a p p o in te d D ir e c to r o f S t a f f D u tie s a t Army H e a d q u a rte rs in

J u ly i9 6 0 , and became Deputy Commander, 1s t D iv is io n in Ja n u ary 1963· I n January" 1965, M ajo r-G en eral MacDonald was a p p o in te d Commander, Papua and New G uinea Command. He was awarded th e OBE in th e New Y ear Honours in 1953, and was m entioned i n d e sp a tc h e s in November

1953 f o r h i s s e r v ic e s in K orea. He was prom oted M ajo r-G en eral and

a p p o in te d Deputy C h ie f o f th e G eneral S t a f f in A p ril 1966. In

A ugust 1967, M ajo r-G en eral MacDonald was a p p o in te d A c tin g A d ju ta n t- G eneral and became Commander, A u s tr a lia n F orce V ietnam , i n Ja n u a ry 1 9 6 8. .

A r t i l l e r y , in 1945. He f i l l e d a s t a f f appointm ent a t Army Head­

R e p r e s e n ta tiv e and M il ita r y A tta c h e in W ashington, D.C. , in 1954.

A f t e r a s e r i e s o f to p app o in tm en ts in A u s tr a li a , he r e tu r n e d to

W ashington as Head o f th e A u s tr a lia n J o i n t S e rv ic e s S t a f f in Ja n u ary

1964 and a ls o A tta c h e (D efence A d v is e r), a t th e A u s tr a lia n Embassy.

On h i s r e t u r n to A u s tr a li a in J a n u a ry1 1966, he a c te d f o r th r e e months

a s D eputy C h ie f o f th e G eneral S t a f f (and F i f t h Member o f th e M il ita r y

B o a rd ), b e fo re assum ing th e appointm ent o f M a ster-G e n eral o f th e

O rdnance, (and F o u rth Member o f th e M il ita r y Board) in May 1966. He assumed th e appointm ent o f A d ju ta n t-G e n e ra l on Ja n u ary 29, 1968. ■

M ajo r-G en eral Mervyn F ra n c is Brogan, CBE, g ain ed th e Sword o f Honour when he g ra d u a te d from th e Royal M il ita r y C o lle g e , D untroon i n 1935. He a tte n d e d Sydney U n iv e r s ity f o r th e two y e a rs fo llo w in g ,

g a in in g h i s B a ch e lo r o f E n g in e e rin g degree in 1938. In th e same

y e a r he was a p p o in te d a d ju ta n t o f 3rd D iv is io n E n g in e e rs and th e

fo llo w in g y e a r a s C h ie f I n s t r u c t o r o f th e M il ita r y E n g in e e rin g School

a t L iv e rp o o l. A f te r a s e r i e s o f S t a f f appointm ents he was p o ste d

to H e a d q u a rte rs , New G uinea F orce as A s s is ta n t Q u a rte rm a ste r-G e n e ra l. I n 1947 M ajo r-G en eral Brogan r e tu r n e d to A u s t r a l i a from Germany and f o r th r e e y e a rs was Commandant o f th e School o f M il ita r y E n g in e e rin g .

M ajo r-G en eral Brogan, who was awarded th e QBE in 1943 and was m e n tio n e d -in -d e s p a tc h e s d u rin g th e New G uinea cam paign, was a p p o in te d Commandant of th e A u s tr a lia n S t a f f C o lleg e i n Ja n u a ry 1960. H is appointm ent as G eneral O f f ic e r Commanding,

N o rth e rn Command (Q ueensland) to o k e f f e c t on J u ly 29, 1962, and i n

th e B irth d a y Honours on 1963, he was awarded th e CBE. He was

a p p o in te d Q u a rte rm a ste r-G e n e ra l on 24th March, 1966.

M ajo r-G en eral K. Mackay, MBE, g ra d u a te d from th e Royal M i l i t a r y C o lle g e , D untroon, in 1938 and se rv e d in th e M iddle E a s t in

A r t i l l e r y ap p o in tm en ts d u rin g th e e a r ly p a r t o f World War I I . He

was B rig ad e M ajor o f th e 26th B rigade and th e n jo in e d th e s t a f f o f

th e D ir e c to r o f M il ita r y O p e ra tio n s . In 1948 he was p o ste d to th e

command o f th e 67 th I n f a n tr y B a tta lio n , and th e n commanded th e 3rd

B a tta lio n , th e Royal A u s tr a lia n R egim ent. He was C h ie f I n s t r u c t o r

a t th e School o f T a c tic s and A d m in is tra tio n betw een 1952 and 1955

when he was a p p o in te d A s s is ta n t A u s tr a lia n D efence R e p re s e n ta tiv e in

th e U n ite d Kingdom. S t a f f ap p o in tm en ts fo llo w e d u n t i l 1962 when he

a tte n d e d th e Im p e ria l D efence C o lle g e in th e U n ite d Kingdom. On

h i s r e t u r n to A u s t r a l i a we was a p p o in te d D ir e c to r o f M il ita r y O p e ra tio n s

and P la n s a t Army H e a d q u a rte rs in C a n b erra . In A p ril 1966, he was

a p p o in te d Commander o f th e A u s tr a lia n F orce Vietnam and prom oted to th e ran k o f M a jo r-G e n e ra l. I11 Ja n u a ry 1967, he r e tu r n e d to A u s tr a li a

due to i l l n e s s and in May 1967 to o k up th e appointm ent o f Commander

F i r s t D iv is io n a t V ic t o r i a B a rra c k s, P ad d in g to n , NSW. M ajor-G eneral

Mackay r e c e iv e d th e MBE f o r 'h i s s e r v ic e s in New G uinea in 1943 and

1944. .
