MAJOR DRUG SEIZURE IN SYDNEY

Statement by the Minister for Customs and Excise, the Hon. D.L. Chipp, M.P.

The Minister for Customs and Excise, Mr Chipp, today released details of the seizure of 21Olbs of hashish by Narcotics Bureau agents in Sydney on 18 October.

A 20-year-old Lebanese National was arrested and charged late last night with offences relating to the seizure.

The hashish, which has a blackmarket value in excess of $250,000, is the largest single seizure of the drug yet made in Australia.

The announcement of the seizure was delayed to enable agents of the Bureau to carry out extensive investigations into the illicit importation of the consign ment which had been discovered in a legitimate cargo

consignment being held in a Sydney warehouse.

The cargo, plastic containers of molasses, had been imported into Sydney late in August and was being detained in the warehouse because of import restrictions. The hashish, which was contained in cloth sacks, was

immersed in the molasses,

' The Narcotics Bureau has now seized approximately 4501bs of hashish in little more than eight weeks.
