RECORD SEIZURE OF ILLEGALLY IMPORTED HASHISH BY

NARCOTICS BUREAU AT FREMANTLE

Statement by the Minister for Customs and Excise,

(Senator the Hon. Malcolm Scott).

Officers of the Narcotics Bureau of the Department of Customs and

Excise, assisted by members of the Department’s Prevention and Detection

section, yesterday afternoon seized 6-glb of hashish on the Danish vessel

"Mads Skou" in Fremantle Harbour. Current market value of the seizure is

about $5,500·

The Minister for Customs and Excise, (Senator Malcolm Scott)

said this in Canberra today (8th November).

He said: "This is the largest seizure by Australian Customs.,-Officers of imported hashish and one of the largest of any narcotic, drug

seized in Australia. .

"The vessel came from Karachi and was intensively searched in Fremantle

after the earlier discovery of two ounces of Cannabis on 5th November, for possession

of which a Finnish seaman was fined $300.

"Investigations are proceeding and are expected to result in further

changes". . . .

The Minister said that the success at Fremantle followed the seizure of

2-| ounces of marihuana and two cages containing 15 Madagascar weavers and 17 parrots

on 6th November from the "Melbourne Star" in Port Adelaide. The birds had been

handed to the Quarantine authorities and destroyed; both species were potential

carriers of exotic diseases which could have had disastrous effects on the poultry

industry. . .
