Statement by the Minister, for Customs and Excise

The Minister for Customs and Excise, Senator the

Honourable Ken Anderson, announced today that he had decided

to permit the use of spirit, made from sub-standard dried

grapes from the 1967 pack, for fortifying win e .

Senator Anderson said that this question was

examined annually in terms of Excise Regulations, which allow

the use of dried-grape spirit only when sufficient stocks of

Spirit made from fresh grapes of wine varieties are not

available to meet the requirements of the Wine Industry.

The Minister went on to say that in making his

decision, he had taken into consideration the stocks of

fortifying spirit and the views of the wine making industry.
