Minister for Communications ■ The Hon. N.A. Brown, Q.C., M.P.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, AND TECHNOLOGICAL.

CHANGE IN INDUSTRY

The Minister for Communications, Mr Neil Brown, stressed today the importance of the private sector maintaining a strong

research and development capability, and of applying

technological changes to both increase the efficiency of

Australian industry and create further employment opportunities.

Mr Brown made these comments today when unveiling a

commemorative plaque to record the Tenth Anniversary of

Printronics Pty Ltd at the company's premises in Sydney.

Printronics Pty Ltd is a major supplier of printed circuits to the communications and electronics industries.

Mr Brown said that the predictions from the OECD, supported by

other reputable institutions, of a continuing downturn in the

world economy made it more important than ever that Australian

industry maintain its capability to compete with overseas

manufacturers. It was primarily through developments in the

private sector that the Australian community must look to

expanding the job opportunities for the growing Australian workforce.

Australians had an enviable record in scientific and technolog

ical research, and Australian industry had, over many years,

demonstrated its ability to be innovative and compete with overseas products.

Mr Brown congratulated Printronics Pty Ltd on its ten years of

successful operations in an industry which employs high technology. '
