STATEMENT FOR PRESS

THE MINISTER FOR THE

CAPITAL TERRITORY

The Minister for the Capital Territory, Mr Tony Staley, has agreed to the construction of a permanent fruit and vegetable market on a new site in Belconnen.

The new site is in an area between Belconnen Way and the Technical and Further Education College, off Benjamin Way.

Mr Staley said today the. site had been recommended by the National Capital Development Commission .following discussions with the Retail Market Trust.

Mr Staley said he had asked the National Capital Development Commission to proceed with the planning of the new market so that it could be opened early next year.

The Trust would repay the capital cost of the new market plus interest as is the case with the market at Fyshwick.

Mr Staley said this was an important development for the people of Belconnen. He was well aware, through represĀ­ entations made to him by Senator Knight, of the need for a permanent market in Belconnen.
