THE MINISTER FOR THE
CAPITAL TERRITORY mm
The Minister for the Capital Territory, Mr. Kep Enderby,
today described as hypocritical and misleading criticism
of Canberra's land system by former Country Party Minister
for the area, Mr. Ralph Hunt.
"It is completely hypocritical for Mr. Hunt to complain
of high land prices in Canberra", Mr. Enderby said. "His
Government created the unsatisfactory policies that
produced the land spiral . It abolished ground rents and
used the auction system to continually drive up prices .
At the same time Mr. Hunt and his colleagues failed in .
their responsibility to release and service sufficient land
They lived in a policy vacuum and let Canberra's future
go hang .
Now like all discredited politicians, Mr. Hunt blames his
successor, who has to clean up the mess. Well we are.
cleaning it up .
I have suspended his auction system and new land policies
wi'll shortly be introduced to meet the responsibility Mr.
Hunt and his Government never faced up to - to provide
people with a place to live at a price they can afford".
