INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION REPORT

ON GLUCOSE A N D GLUCOSE SYRUPS

The Minister for Industry and C o m m e r c e , Senator

Robert Cotton, and the Minister for Business and Consumer

A f f a i r s , Mr Wal. F i f e , today announced the Government's

decision on the Industries Assistance Commission's report

on Glucose and Glucose Syrups.

The Ministers said :

"The Commission found glucose and dextrose

production to be low cost and worthwhile activities and

recommended duty rates of 10 per cent on d e x t r o s e , and

5 per cent on glucose and glucose syrups (other than flavoured

or coloured glucose for which min i m u m rates were rec o m m e n d e d ) "

-"The Government has accepted the Commission's

r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s , except in respect of coloured or flavoured

glucose and glucose s y r u p s , and of dextrose monohydrate.

Coloured or flavoured glucose and glucose syrups will be

dutiable at the rate of 5 per cent which is to apply to

other forms of glucose. Additional assistance is considered

necessary in the short term for the production of dextrose

monohydrate and accordingly imports of this product will

be dutiable at 20 per cent for 2 years and 10 per cent thereafter.

"The Government has also decided to adopt the

Commission's recommendations that the standing by- l a w on

anhydrous dextrose be retained until a suitably equivalent

product is reasonably available from local manufacture

"Goods of N e w Zealand and Papua N e w Guinea

ori g i n will continue to be admitted free of duty."

Copies of the Commission's report are expected

to be available in the near future from Australian Government

Publis h i n g Service Bookshops in capital cities.
