INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION REPORT

STRANDED WIRE. CABLES. ETC. OF COPPER; INSULATED

ELECTRIC WIRE. CABLE ETC.

The Minister for Industry and Commerce, Senator Robert Cotton, and the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, Mr Wal. Fife, today announced that the Government has accepted, subject to international commitments, the recommendations made

in the report on Stranded Wire, Cables, Etc of Copper; Insulated Electric Wire, Cable, Etc.

. The Ministers said that the following duties would apply : . stranded wire, cables, etc of copper wire

. magnet winding wire as defined by by-law

. insulated electric wire '

etc, designed for working pressures exceeding 33>OOOV; compensation or extension leads for thermocouples

' . all other goods under reference

The Ministers added that these rates of duty involve relatively small reductions in the levels of assistance currently accorded this industry and are not expected to aff,ect the competitive position of local manufacturers relative to imports; for 80% of the goods covered by

the report the duty reduction would be 2 percentage points.

The Ministers said that the Government recognised the special problems faced by the magnet winding wire sector and has decided to continue the current level of assistance for a further three years.

The Government has noted the Commission's comments regarding imports from New Zealand and accepted its suggestion that the situation be kept under review. ยท

The Ministers said that it has also been, decided to amend the present definition of magnet winding wire to include single or stranded aluminium wire in addition to single or stranded copper wire. This action has been taken because of the substitutability of aluminium wire for copper wire in many applications.

Details of the Customs Tariff changes arising from the . Government's decision will be announced when administrative arrangements to implement them have been finalised. '
