Statement made by the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, the Honourable Wal. Fife

The Commonwealth Government has introduced

a prohibition on importation of bullet-proof protective

jackets, vests, body armour and other apparel.

The Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs,

Mr Wal. Fife, announced the ban today.

He said that the ban, imposed under the Customs

(Prohibited Imports); Regulations, arose out of representations

from the New South Wales Government.

There has been concern that such protective

apparel could be readily available for use in criminal

activities. .

Mr Fife said the control would help to alleviate

this problem by ensuring that the bullet-proof apparel is

imported for use only by Defence authorities, Police forces

and other bodies demonstrating a legitimate need.
