INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION REPORT ON

ROOM AIR CONDITIONERS

(Joint Statement by the Minister for Industry and Commerce, Senator Robert Cotton and the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, Mr Wal, Fife) .

The Minister for Industry and Commerce, Senator

Robert Cotton, and the Minister for Business and Consumer

Affairs, Mr Wal. Fife, announced today that the Government

had decided not to provide any additional short-term assistance

against imports to the Australian industry producing room air

conditioners.

The Government1s decision followed its acceptance of

the Industries Assistance Commission fs Interim Report, on

Short-Term Assistance for Room Air Conditioners, of 2 June 1977.

This report arose from a request for additional short-term

assistance by manufacturers of room air conditioners, during the

Commission's current inquiry into the long-term assistance needs

of the domestic refrigerating appliances industry.

On the evidence provided, the Commission was not

satisfied that a case had been made by the industry for short

term assistance.

Furthermore, the Commission expressed serious doubts

whether the manufacturers' requested tariff action, if implemented

now, would materially affect the level of imports for next season.

Copies of the Commission's report will be available

shortly from Australian Government Publishing Service retail

bookshops in each of the capital cities.
