jmJSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION REPORT CERTAIN PAPER ARP PAPERBOARD - TARIFF QUOTAS

The Minister for Industry and Commerce, Senator Robert Cotton, and the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, Mr John Howard, today released the Industries Assistance Commission's report of 18 February 1977 on tariff quotas applying to imports of certain paper and paperboard.

The Ministers said that the Government had accepted the Commission's recommendation that these tariff quotas be removed and this would be done forthwith.

The Ministers noted that the quotas had originally been introduced in late 1976 following a report by the Temporary Assistance Authority. The reference to the Authority followed an application for temporary assistance from the sole Australian manufacturer of most of the goods concerned. In accepting the Commission's recommendation that the quotas could now be removed the Government noted that the industry in evidence before the

Commission, had not sought to have the quotas continued after 51 May 1977ยท

Copies of the Commission's report are expected to be available in the near future from Australian Government Publishing Service Bookshops in capital cities.
