FREEZE ON PRICES AND INCOMES

The Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs,

Mr. John Howard, said today that he was most encouraged by

the response so far to the joint call by the Commonwealth. aricT

State Governments for a three month freeze on prices and incomes.

Mr. Howard said he was particularly pleased

with the expression of support from the Australian Retailers'

Association and also a number of individual retailers.

The Minister said he had already spoken to

the Chairman of the Prices Justification Tribunal, Mr. Justice

Williams, and would confer further with him in Melbourne

tomorrow.

Mr. Howard said that the proposal inevitably

raised a number of specific questions and issues. Federal

and State-officials had been studying these and other aspects

of the detailed implementation of the proposal today and

he expected it would be possible to make a further and

detailed statement shortly.

Mr. Howard concluded by saying that ultimately

the success of the proposal rested upon the degree of

community support it received.
