TOY HYPODERMIC SYRINGE BAN

The Commonwealth Government has banned the import of a toy hypodermic syringe carrying the trade name "HYPO-PHONY".

The Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs, Mr John Howard, announced the ban today and said it would also cover any similar item which might encourage drug taking.

He said many people had been concerned about the sale of the toy.

There had been stories in the media on it and he had received representations about it from Parliamentarians particularly the Member for St. George, Mr M. Neil M.P.

Mr Howard said he had been concerned about the sale of the toy for some time and last year had issued a news release announcing his intention to ban its import.

He considered it against public interest for such toys to be available to children.

The ban came under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations. .
