STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE J.W. HOWARD, M.P., MINISTER FOR BUSINESS AND CONSUMER AFFAIRS

76/95 New Permanent Head

The Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs,

Mr. John Howard, today announced that Mr. M.A. (Tim) Besley

has been appointed from 8 November, 1976, as Permanent Head

of the Department of Business and Consumer Affairs.

Mr. Besley succeeds Mr. A.T. Carmody who has been

appointed Secretary to the Department of the Prime Minister

and Cabinet.

Mr. Besley has been First Assistant Secretary in

charge of the Foreign Investment Division of the Treasury

since July 1973. Earlier in his career he served as an

Engineer with the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority

and as a Senior Official of the Department of External

Territories.

Mr. Howard said that as First Assistant Secretary

in charge of the Foreign Investment Division Mr. Besley had

gained extensive experience in many sectors of the Australian

economy and that this experience would be of great value in

his new position.

Mr. Howard paid high tribute to Mr. Carmody's

contribution to the activities of the Department of Business

and Consumer Affairs since the establishment of the Department

at the end of last year.
