INDUSTRIES ASSISTANCE COMMISSION REPORT PAINTS VARNISHES AND LACQUERS

The Government has accepted the Industries Assistance

Commission1s recommendations in its report on paints varnishes

and lacquer^.

The Minister for Industry and Commerce, Senator Robert

Cotton, and the Minister for Business and Consumer Affairs,

Mr. John Howard, announced this today.

The Ministers said that goods under reference, excepting

putties, mastics and artists1 colours, would now be subject to a

15 per cent ad valorem duty. Putties and mastics of the polyester

type would be subject to a 20 per cent ad valorem duty and the

other products covered by the report would be dutiable at minimum

rates.

Subsequent to the public inquiry representations were

received in regard to assistance for silicone sealants. The

information provided was made available to the Industries

Assistance Commission. A copy of the related correspondence is

attached. The Ministers said that they agreed with the views

expressed by the Commission on this correspondence.

Details of Customs Tariff changes resulting from this

decision would be announced when administrative arrangements had

been completed. .

The Commission's report would be available at the

Australian Government Publishing Services retail book shop in

each capital city.
